Tobias „Harri“ Harand studied chemistry at FAU and joined the Span Group late 2022. In his Master thesis, he worked on the [FeFe] Hydrogenase from Nitratidesulfovibrio vulgaris, which is one of the most active hydrogen producing enzymes known. His main objective was the site-directed mutagenesis of selected amino acids in the protein sequence.  Since January 2025, he holds a Kekulé fellowship granted by the “Fonds der Chemischen Industrie” and continues to investigate amino acid residues near the active site and in the gas channel of the enzyme to further the understanding of these molecular features. He uses analytical methods such as IR, EPR and UV-Vis spectroscopy as well as (micro)crystallisation for X-ray diffraction experiments at DESY and ESRF.
