The GSMS offers an interdisciplinary educational programme for graduate students within three research areas, namely Molecular Materials, Design and Engineering of Molecular Catalysts, and Molecular Modelling and Simulation. These three areas are reflected in a complementary fashion by three research centres: the Interdisciplinary Center for Molecular Materials (ICMM), the Erlangen Catalysis Resource Center (ECRC), and the Computer Chemistry Center (CCC).

The GSMS is also strongly connected to the Collaborative Research center 953 „Synthetic Carbon allotropes” (SFB 953 “Synthetische Kohlenstoffallotrope) as the GSMS serves as the graduate school for SFB 953.

Important subjects within the GSMS research programme include advanced technologies such as Molecular Electronics, Supramolecular Chemistry, Nanoscience, Surface Phenomena, and Catalysis. Within the programme a lecture course, summer and winter workshops, and the academy offer presentations by an interdisciplinary exchange with internationally recognised scientists in the field of molecular science.
