Signs for participating pharmacies (Image: FAU)

Our research group has received confirmation from the Government of Upper Franconia (Department 53.2 – Pharmacy, responsible for the administrative districts of Upper Palatinate, Middle, Lower and Upper Franconia) for the collection and recycling of expired drugs.

General information on the disposal of expired drugs

  1. Please hand in expired drugs preferably in their original packaging and packed in bags. However, drugs are often available loose in blister packs. These can also be handed in.
  2. Expired drugs in glass bottles are less suitable for the initiative, as there is a considerable risk of breakage during the various transport steps. This severely jeopardizes the usability of other expired drugs in the same transport unit.
  3. Used needles represent a considerable safety risk and must not be dispensed. Narcotics, cytostatics or medical devices (diabetes test strips, blood pressure monitors, etc.) are also not usable for the used drugs initiative.

The current collection point opening hours at the FAU Chemikum:

Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 9 am to 4 pm.

It is possible to drop off items in person outside opening hours by prior arrangement by telephone.

Expired drugs whose ingredients cannot (yet) be recovered as part of the research initiative are disposed of directly by us via Erlangen’s Zweckverband Abfallwirtschaft and the administrative district of Erlangen-Höchstadt.
