Leave of Absence / “Vacation” Semester

If you have an important reason to take a leave of absence from your studies, you may be allowed to take one or two semesters off without penalty towards your semester count. Reasons for a leave of absence might include, for example, studying abroad, illness or injury, pregnancy, or raising children. Your request for a leave of absence is, as a general rule, to be submitted before the start of the lecture period.

Learning Lab

The Learning Lab is a place for all students of the FAU to seek help with any and all questions about studying and student life. Where are the best places to really concentrate on studying, whether alone or with a group? What kinds of groups, workshops, and seminars are available? What kinds of resources and information are offered online? What does it mean to work “scientifically”? Find out more on their website.

Language Classes

At the FAU, you have the opportunity to take any of numerous language courses, some of which can even count towards the credit points for your degree program.

Information about language acquisition and placement courses can be found on the website of the language center:

Exmatriculation / Ending Your Enrollment

Students and doctoral candidates can deregister from the university on their own if they would like to transfer to another university, end or interrupt their (doctoral) studies, or if they successfully complete their (doctoral) studies.

You may be automatically deregistered from the university if you fail to re-enroll in time, if you fail all attempts at an examination, or if you have successfully completed your studies.

You may submit your exmatriculation to student administration at any point in time. In contrast to enrollment, exmatriculation is not bound by deadlines.

Before leaving Germany and returning to their respective home countries, international students and doctoral candidates are required to appear personally in the student administration office to deregister from the FAU.

They are also responsible for the assessment of instruction in conjunction with student evaluations.
