Karina studied biochemistry at the Eberhard Karls Universität in Tübingen, where she obtained both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees with a pronounced focus on structural biology. She acquiered the first set of skills in the vast field of protein X-ray crystallography during her Bachelor thesis in the Stehle group by investigation of catalysis mechanisms in bacterial and fungal enzymes in 2019. Her graduate studies were finalised in 2022 by studying the properties of glycoproteins in the neurosystem. As an assistant researcher she worked on bacterial cell wall recycling as potential drug targets. During multiple lab rotations she got hands-on experience with cryoEM on protein:DNA complexes and handling of RNA. Beginning in May 2022, she started her doctoral studies in the group of Prof. Dr. Span on the production of artificial cobalt metalloproteins.
